Fernando Alonso has made clear that his Formula 1 future does not depend on the upgrade Aston Martin plans to introduce at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Team technical director Adrian Newey has indicated the new parts could be a deciding factor in keeping the two‑time champion, but Alonso says his decision will be based on broader considerations.
Aston Martin’s start to the 2026 regulation era has been difficult, with the Silverstone‑based squad managing only a single point across the first eight rounds. The team has frequently been about a second off the pace of the leading pack, a shortfall Newey attributes largely to the current package’s lack of performance. The upcoming upgrade is therefore seen as a chance to close the gap and improve competitiveness.
While Newey hopes the Hungarian upgrade will showcase a turnaround and persuade Alonso to stay, the driver’s comments suggest he will weigh his options independently of any single development. The next race will test whether the new components can deliver the performance boost the team expects.
