The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a clinical trial to determine if semaglutide, a chemical used in weight loss drugs, can help treat alcohol use disorder. The trial, called the CRAVE trial, will screen over 600 veterans with moderate or severe alcohol use disorder over 24 weeks.
Participants will receive weekly injections of either semaglutide or a placebo, and researchers will monitor them to track changes in drinking, health, and quality of life.
The trial is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2027 and will be carried out at 18 VA medical centers around the country. The VA is looking for veterans between the ages of 18 and 80 to participate in the study.
