President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create the U.S. Space Academy, a new service academy dedicated to training Space Force officers, NASA personnel, and civilian space industry professionals.
The academy will combine technical education with leadership development, discipline, and public service commitments, operating under a NASA-led federal framework. Trump announced the decision during an event at NASA’s Johnson Space Center honoring the Artemis II mission crew.
The order establishes a commission led by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink to draft a report on curriculum, structure, and service obligations within 120 days. The academy will train future Space Force guardians, who currently study at the Air Force Academy or undergo basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
No location or opening timeline has been set, though Trump stated a site would be selected "very shortly." Space Force leadership aims to double its current 10,000 guardians.
