The ex-USS Mobile Bay, a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser, is scheduled to be sunk by friendly forces in the next few weeks as part of the Rim of the Pacific exercise.
The ship, which was decommissioned in 2023, will be joined by the ex-USS Peleliu, an amphibious assault ship, in the sinking exercise. The event is the capstone of the RIMPAC exercise, which began on June 24 and runs through July 31.

The sinking exercise will test a variety of weapons systems and crews, and the exact date and manner of the sinking are not yet known. The USS Mobile Bay has a long history of service, including participation in Operation Desert Storm and the evacuation of thousands of people displaced by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
