The Marine Corps announced Tuesday that a new primary military occupational specialty for scouts will go live on Oct. 1, designated MOS 0315. The change creates a 26‑Marine Scout Platoon within each infantry battalion and adds Scout Teams to light armored reconnaissance battalions.
Scout units will field advanced optics, communications gear and small unmanned aerial systems for reconnaissance and surveillance. Each team includes a Joint Fires Observer to coordinate air and artillery strikes. "This professional, purpose‑built force will provide commanders with the organic reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities essential for success on the future battlefield," Lt. Gen. Jay M. Bargeron said.

The move follows earlier statements by Maj. Gen. Michael A. Brooks, who said leaders were considering elevating the scout MOS to a primary status like machine gunners or mortarmen and hinted at a new Ground Reconnaissance Course. Retired Lt. Col. Worth Parker clarified that scouts operate closer to the forward edge of battle, helping rifle companies locate routes before linking up with the commander, whereas Recon Marines work at greater distances.
