Retired Marine Maj. James Capers Jr. will be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during a harrowing ambush in South Vietnam nearly 60 years ago. Capers led a nine-man team through the ambush, ignoring his numerous serious wounds, and refused to board a helicopter unless the crew took the body of the team's military working dog.
Capers' heroism is legendary, but he does not consider himself a hero, saying he was just doing his job and trying to save his troops.

The award is the culmination of years of effort from veterans who advocated for Capers to receive the Medal of Honor, which was previously upgraded from a Bronze Star to a Silver Star in 2010.
