Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract worth over $35 billion to significantly increase the production of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors. This seven-year contract, awarded by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, aims to quadruple the production of THAAD interceptors.
The move comes at a time when the U.S. is looking to replenish its munitions stockpile, which has been depleted due to recent conflicts. The U.S. Missile Defense Agency is pushing for an increase in munitions procurement, and this contract is a major step in that direction.
The contract is part of the Pentagon's Acquisition Transformation Strategy, which aims to reform the defense industrial base and accelerate the delivery of products at a lower cost. Lockheed Martin will provide THAAD missile rounds under a fixed-priced contract, with work to be completed across four cities in the United States.
