The Golden Dome missile defense shield, a critical initiative for the US military, is at risk of being halted due to a budget impasse. Gen. Michael Guetlein, the director of Golden Dome, warned that if a budgetary solution is not found, the initiative will come to a stop. Despite having $22.5 billion appropriated for the project, 95 percent of which is already committed, Guetlein emphasized that the current funding mechanism is unsustainable.
The initiative, which aims to deliver a comprehensive missile defense system by 2028, has been allocated $185 billion. However, independent estimates suggest that the actual cost could be significantly higher, with some projections reaching up to $1.2 trillion over 20 years.
Guetlein stressed that the project's progress is being hindered by the current funding mechanism, which relies on reconciliation bills. He warned that if a new funding solution is not found, the project will be severely impacted, and the US military's ability to deliver the desired capabilities will be compromised.
