Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have signed an agreement to co-produce the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) at Rheinmetall’s Unterlüß site in northern Germany. This marks the first time the ballistic missile will be manufactured outside the United States.
The move aims to address the high demand for ATACMS in Europe and Ukraine, estimated to be around 600 to 800 units annually. The partnership will create a European “centre of excellence” for manufacturing, integrating, and distributing ATACMS to NATO and allied forces.
The production is expected to start in 2027, with the site in Germany becoming the first non-American location to produce ATACMS missiles. The U.S. government's consent is required for the technology transfer, and the joint venture is subject to Washington's approval.
