NATO will add up to five MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicles to its network of aerial sensors. The drones, built by Northrop Grumman, are designed for maritime surveillance over vast stretches of sea.
Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance for the alliance. The Triton aircraft can fly for long periods at high altitude, covering large areas, including over open water, more efficiently than most other aircraft.
The addition of these drones will help NATO detect threats early, protect sea lines of communication, and support operations in demanding regions. Northrop Grumman will build the Triton aircraft, while European industry will work on mission support, data systems, and infrastructure.
