DARPA’s Lift Challenge concluded with no drone lifting four times its own weight, but AVIDrone came closest. The Canadian company’s Katana electric helicopter lifted 112.4 pounds with a 29.3-pound airframe, achieving a 3.84-to-1 payload-to-weight ratio over five nautical miles.
AVIDrone’s first-place finish earned $1.25 million, while MTech Operations (3.64:1) and Xtreme Aerial Concepts (3.45:1) took second and third place, winning $750,000 and $500,000 respectively. DARPA also awarded subjective prizes for innovation, including Most Revolutionary Aerodynamic Design to the University of Maryland and Most Revolutionary Powertrain Design to Portal Aircraft Company.
Program manager Phillip “Donna” Smith called heavy vertical flight the next major inflection point for industries like agriculture, logistics, and construction. He highlighted the challenge’s role in fostering collaboration among inventors, investors, and users to tackle future aviation problems.
