The Army has introduced a new directive outlining the criteria for evaluating religious waivers for beards.
Soldiers seeking a waiver must swear under oath to having sincerely held religious beliefs and provide supporting evidence. The directive emphasizes that only religious beliefs, not secular ones, can be grounds for accommodation.
Commanders, chaplains, and reviewing authorities will assess the soldier's overall conduct to determine whether their stated beliefs consistently guide their actions. The application process includes interviews with chaplains and two types of assessments to evaluate the basis and sincerity of the requests.
