The U.S. Army has issued a Sources Sought notice requesting proposals to produce 133,014 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets by 2034. Contractors have until September 1 to submit white papers detailing plans to meet the annual quota of 19,002 rockets starting in 2028, with first deliveries expected in February 2030.
The scope includes production of unitary, alternative warhead, and extended-range variants, along with tooling and engineering changes. Current manufacturer Lockheed Martin is scaling capacity to 14,000 rockets per year, but the Army’s plan would require a nearly 36% increase beyond that. Submissions must outline the most efficient and cost-effective methods to achieve the target rate.
GMLRS rockets are fired from M270 and HIMARS launchers, with base variants reaching 70 kilometers and extended-range versions extending to 150 kilometers. Lockheed Martin had delivered 75,000 rockets by 2024, yet demand remains unmet due to heavy usage in Ukraine and conflicts involving Iran. Stockpile depletion has been compounded by shortages of rocket motors and Russian GPS jamming that reduced guidance reliability.
