The US State Department has notified Congress of its intent to release $600 million in funding for Gavi, an international organization that supports vaccine access for children in developing nations.
This decision comes after continued advocacy from House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro and her Democratic colleagues. DeLauro criticized the initial blockage of these funds, stating that it was shameful and put children at risk.
Gavi has helped vaccinate over 1 billion children globally over the past 25 years, preventing more than 20 million deaths. DeLauro urged Secretary Kennedy to stop prioritizing personal opinions over scientific evidence, citing the risk to children's health.
