President Trump announced a new round of economic sanctions against Iran on Friday, framing the move as economic warfare aimed at curbing Tehran’s regional influence. The Treasury Department will target Iran’s oil exports and financial institutions, expanding existing restrictions that have already reduced Iranian crude sales by more than 50% since 2024.
The sanctions package follows months of escalating tensions, including recent attacks on shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and cyber strikes on Iranian infrastructure. Analysts warn the measures could further destabilize global oil markets already showing signs of tight supply.
Separately, the Supreme Court agreed to review a dispute over the use of the White House’s private ballroom for official events, a case that tests the limits of executive branch authority in federal property management.
