President Donald Trump has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for five Mississippi counties impacted by severe weather on May 6-7, 2026. The declaration will provide assistance to residents and help with recovery efforts in the affected areas.
The severe weather caused seven tornadoes to touch down across the state, injuring 26 people and damaging 425 homes. Governor Tate Reeves thanked President Trump for the declaration, stating it will help the state's recovery efforts and provide additional assistance to Mississippians.
Individual Assistance was approved for Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wilkinson counties, and Public Assistance was approved for Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties. This assistance will include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans, and other programs designed to help individuals recover from disaster impacts.
