The US government has banned Anthropic from exporting its powerful AI models Fable and Mythos to anyone outside the US. This decision was made citing national security concerns after Anthropic gave a South Korean telecom access to Mythos, which allegedly has ties to China. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also reportedly alerted the administration about a potential 'jailbreak' of Fable 5's safeguards.
The ban is part of a long history of governments trying to use export controls to limit the proliferation of cyber technology. In the 1990s, the US government tried to stop the distribution of encryption technologies like Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), but ultimately failed. More recently, governments have tried to limit the export of spyware, but this has also had mixed results.
The outcome of this ban is still uncertain, with the possibility that the US administration may lift the restriction to keep American AI companies competitive worldwide. However, if the ban remains in place, it could lead to a compliance burden for American AI companies, potentially denting their bottom line.
