Truecaller is challenging India's telecom regulator over anti-spam rules, saying they hinder protection from unwanted calls. The company's CEO, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, publicly accused the regulator of preventing Truecaller from displaying community-reported spam information for certain numbers.
The dispute stems from a 2024 framework designating specific number series for commercial communications. However, Jhunjhunwala argues this policy has led to unintended consequences, including eroded trust in legitimate business calls.
Truecaller data shows users are increasingly ignoring calls from the designated number series, with 81% of calls from one series and 79% from another being ignored over the past eight months. The company has introduced a 'Frequently Blocked' badge to alert users when a number has been blocked by many people.
