Realta Fusion has announced a breakthrough in fusion energy, generating electricity directly from a fusion reaction. The company's demonstration fusion device, WHAM, was able to power a lightbulb using electricity harvested from the reaction.
This achievement is significant as it promises to be more efficient than traditional methods of generating electricity from fusion reactions. Realta Fusion's approach involves harvesting electricity directly from the fusion reactions themselves, which could lead to a more efficient and profitable process.
The company plans to use this technology to heat the plasma in its reactor, a process that requires a lot of energy. With an estimated 90% efficiency, direct conversion could provide a significant boost to the company's commercial-scale power plant's total output, potentially increasing it by 20% to 30%.
Realta Fusion is not the only company working on direct energy conversion, but it is the first to publicly demonstrate the technology.
