Core Devices has launched the Pebble Time 2, a $225 smartwatch that leans into playful design over corporate polish. The device features a color e-paper screen, physical buttons, and a silicone band in blue, red, silver, or black, setting it apart from sleek rivals like the Apple Watch. Its always-on display lasts up to 21 days per charge, aided by a backlight toggle and low-power design.
The watch’s appeal lies in its community-driven software, which includes over 2,120 custom watch faces and apps. Many were built by hobbyists for niche uses, from tracking tennis scores to solar exposure, alongside retro games and AI-powered tools. Core Devices, led by original Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky, revived the brand after open-sourcing the original OS and selling 25,000 units across 93 countries.

While limited by iOS restrictions—no text replies or deep app integration—Pebble Time 2 offers a lighter alternative to hyper-connected wearables. The company continues to update firmware and plans future features like noise-canceling mics. A third model, the Pebble Round 2, ships in September.
