Opendoor, a San Francisco-based online home-buying platform, is closing its India operations less than two years after expanding in the country. The move is attributed to a push to bring operational work back to the U.S. and a shift toward smaller AI-native teams.
The decision has gained traction in Silicon Valley, where it's seen as an example of how AI is reshaping the economics of offshore work. India has evolved into the world's largest Global Capability Center market, with over 2,100 centers employing about 2.36 million people and generating nearly $100 billion in annual revenue.
The closure has sparked debate among investors and outsourcing experts, with some viewing it as a sign of what AI could mean for India's vast outsourcing workforce. Others see it as evidence of a larger shift in how companies are organized, with AI reducing the need for operational labor and allowing firms to run leaner organizations.
