OpenAI is strengthening its roster in the run‑up to its initial public offering by bringing two well‑known AI figures on board. The moves aim to boost both technical depth and policy credibility as the company readies for market scrutiny.
Noam Shazeer, a longtime Google engineer and co‑author of the 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper that introduced the Transformer architecture, announced his departure from Google on Wednesday. Shazeer, who also founded the role‑playing startup Character AI and was part of a $2.7 billion deal that returned his technology to Google, is joining OpenAI after a career that includes occasional internal debates over political topics.
Former Trump White House AI policy official Dean Ball will lead a new "Strategic Futures" team at OpenAI, starting July 6. Ball, who helped draft the U.S. AI Action Plan and now returns to the Foundation for American Innovation as a senior fellow, says his group will address catastrophic risk, recursive self‑improvement, labor impacts, and coordination between frontier labs, governments and society. He will report to Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.
The hires signal OpenAI’s intent to lock in top‑tier talent and governance expertise before going public, a strategy that could shape how the firm navigates regulatory pressure and competition from rivals such as Anthropic.
