NASA will deploy a streamlined spacesuit for its earliest Artemis lunar landings, replacing the originally planned design with a simplified "Sortie Suit" variant. The change follows an internal directive from Artemis Program Manager Jeremy Parsons, who aims to accelerate the timeline for human landings at the Moon’s South Pole as soon as 2028.
The Sortie Suit will be used for the first crewed missions flown on landers built by both SpaceX and Blue Origin. NASA’s goal is to reduce the suit’s mass, cut complexity, and ease integration with lunar landers. The adjustments reflect near-term mission priorities rather than long-term lunar exploration plans.
The decision underscores NASA’s push to meet its accelerated schedule while balancing technical and operational risks.
