Microsoft's carbon emissions rose 25 percent in 2025, totaling 34 million metric tons. The increase was primarily driven by the expansion of the company's datacenter infrastructure.
The company had set a goal to be carbon negative by 2030, but this isn't the first time it has faced setbacks. Microsoft's 2024 sustainability report also showed a similar rise in climate pollution.
The report notes that sustainability solutions are not scaling fast enough to meet the demand driven by AI infrastructure. Google and Amazon have also reported increases in their emissions, with Google seeing a 25 percent spike and Amazon a 16 percent increase.
