Kobo announced that its e‑readers and apps will automatically sync reading progress to StoryGraph, the analytics‑focused book‑tracking platform that rivals Goodreads. The feature, which went live this week, marks the first time a major e‑reader has built‑in support for the service, positioning Kobo as a direct competitor to Amazon’s Kindle‑Goodreads combination.
StoryGraph, founded in 2019 by Nadia Odunayo and Rob Frelow, has grown to over five million readers, while Kobo reports roughly twelve million users across 190 countries. The integration works with both e‑books and audiobooks on any Kobo device or app, and does not require a paid subscription. Users who want deeper charts, custom filters, and comparison tools can upgrade to StoryGraph’s $5‑per‑month Plus tier.
By offering seamless community and recommendation features without hardware lock‑in, Kobo aims to chip away at Amazon’s dominance in the digital‑book market. The move follows similar efforts by startups such as Everand, which recently acquired the Fable reading community, suggesting a broader push toward device‑agnostic reading ecosystems.
