Italy's competition regulator, AGCM, has opened a formal investigation into Apple over its iCloud backup service, alleging the tech giant may be violating the EU Digital Markets Act by giving its own iCloud service preferential access to iOS and iPadOS backup features.
The authority says it has evidence that rival cloud providers such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive cannot use the operating‑system functions that enable a complete device backup, a capability that Apple reserves for iCloud. AGCM will forward its findings to the European Commission, which could impose fines or other corrective measures if it confirms the infringement.
Apple has not commented on the probe. The company recently postponed the rollout of its Siri AI in the EU, citing unresolved privacy and security concerns with regulators. Should the Commission require Apple to open its backup APIs to competitors, the firm may raise similar privacy arguments. The outcome will shape how third‑party cloud services compete with Apple in Europe.
