Instagram is rolling out ‘First Draft,’ an automated editing tool that trims selected clips and removes pauses to create an initial Reels draft in under 10 seconds. The feature is designed to reduce tedious editing work for creators, especially those without professional software experience.
First Draft is available now on iPhone, accessible either from the in-app camera while recording or from the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips. While similar tools exist in apps like CapCut and Adobe Firefly, Instagram’s integration keeps editing within its platform, streamlining workflows for users.
The announcement coincides with Meta’s ongoing social media addiction trial, where Instagram head Adam Mosseri is expected to testify. The company has also introduced other creator tools this year, including a ‘Replace Audio’ feature and tests for a new AI assistant in its Edits app and a ‘Series’ grouping tool for Reels.
