India's decision to restrict access to Telegram has led to a significant increase in VPN downloads and usage of alternative messaging apps. According to Appfigures, VPN app downloads rose 49% on the day the restriction was announced, with Proton VPN and Turbo VPN recording the largest increases.
The surge in VPN demand was accompanied by a rise in downloads of alternative messaging apps, including Signal and Viber. Despite the restriction, Telegram's daily active users in India increased by 17% on the day the measure was announced.

The Indian government's decision to restrict Telegram is tied to concerns about exam-related fraud, and the company has challenged the order in the Delhi High Court. The court is expected to deliver its verdict on Friday.
