IBM has announced a new chip architecture that integrates nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a human fingernail.
This represents nearly twice the transistor density of the company's previous generation of chip technology.
The new chip technology, described as the “world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology”, is expected to improve chip compute performance and energy efficiency, particularly for AI data centers. According to Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, this is a “meaningful leap forward” that could lead to significantly more powerful computing without a corresponding increase in energy.
