Google has started automatically expanding its AI search summaries for some queries, replacing the usual “Show more” prompt with a full response at the top of results pages. The change places the standard list of links significantly lower on the page, forcing users to scroll past the AI Overview and an “Ask anything” box before reaching organic results.
The expansion isn’t consistent across all searches. Early testing showed auto-expanded summaries appearing frequently, but recent attempts often default to the truncated version with the “Show more” button. Queries like “what is the best game on switch 2” reliably triggered the full expansion, though results vary by search term and browser.
Google attributes the shift to user feedback, claiming the dynamic expansion makes searches more helpful and encourages deeper exploration. A spokesperson noted the system cancels expansion if users start scrolling to avoid disrupting their reading position. The criteria for auto-expansion remain unclear.
