General Motors has installed approximately 50 robot arms at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit, Michigan. The robots, made by FANUC, are designed to attach components to vehicles during assembly.
This move has sparked pushback from the United Auto Workers union, as 1,300 workers remain out of work following a supposed temporary layoff in March.
Union leaders argue that GM could bring back some of the laid-off workers instead of relying on automation. The installation of robots has raised concerns about the future of autoworkers in the face of increasing automation.
