Florida has introduced a new state law that prohibits local governments from pursuing net-zero emissions goals. The law, HB 1217, is seen as a crackdown on radical climate policies by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
At least 10 cities and counties in Florida had implemented net-zero emissions policies before the law was passed. However, the law's impact on these existing policies is still unclear.
According to Bradley Marshall, a senior attorney at Earthjustice, the law is meant to discourage municipalities from adopting net-zero policies, but its exact impact is still up for debate. Other climate change reduction policies may not be directly affected by the ban.
