A federal judge has overturned the Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic, ruling the move violated the company’s First Amendment rights. Judge Rita Lin in the Northern District of California vacated government directives that had barred the use of Anthropic’s AI technology, finding the administration retaliated against the firm for refusing to remove safeguards against lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance of Americans.
The ruling stems from a summary judgment motion filed by Anthropic, which argued the government’s designation of the company as a national security supply-chain risk was an unlawful punishment. Judge Lin agreed, stating the record showed the actions were retaliatory and unconstitutional.
The decision marks a setback for the administration’s efforts to restrict AI use in sensitive areas, reinforcing protections for companies that impose ethical limits on their technology.
