The Federal Bureau of Investigation has created a replica town on its Huntsville, Alabama campus to train law enforcement in simulating and investigating real-world cyberattacks. The 22,000 square-foot town, dubbed the Kinetic Cyber Range, features fully furnished houses, a hotel, and other buildings, all wired with functioning devices and systems.
The facility has trained over 1,400 students since opening in February 2025, including FBI personnel and partners from other federal and local agencies. The town allows the FBI to simulate ransomware attacks and their real-world consequences, as well as train investigators in digital forensics.
The Kinetic Cyber Range is part of the FBI's efforts to combat the growing threat of cybercrime, which resulted in a record $20.9 billion in U.S. losses in 2025, according to the FBI's Internet Crime Report.
