A group of 76 cybersecurity experts, including former Facebook chief of security Alex Stamos, have signed an open letter to the US government, protesting the export control order on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models. The experts argue that this action has taken away the best models from defenders, making it harder for them to find vulnerabilities and secure their software and products.
The US government ordered Anthropic to limit the export of Fable and Mythos, citing national security concerns, without explaining the specific reasons behind the order. In response, Anthropic suspended access to the models for all users worldwide.
The experts claim that the method used to bypass Fable's guardrails, as demonstrated by Amazon researchers, does not actually demonstrate a real jailbreak. Instead, it shows the model's ability to fix open source code with public and known vulnerabilities, which is a valuable feature for defensive security.
