Anthropic unveiled the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a set of standardized drivers that let AI agents interface with and control physical devices. The research preview focuses on streamlining experimental setups by replacing custom integrations with a common interface and data format. Anthropic says MHS could cut setup time from weeks or months to hours or minutes.
The effort was inspired by a neuroscientist’s experiment at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus, where rotating lasers, microscopes, and cameras were coordinated through a unified system. Anthropic sees MHS as a foundation for AI to run science experiments autonomously. A technical staffer noted the potential for broader applications beyond lab hardware.
The company frames MHS as a step toward AI agents operating in the physical world, not just digital tasks.
