Alibaba Cloud unveiled HappyHorse 1.1 on Sunday, an API‑first AI video generation model that is now available on Model Studio with a 40% launch discount for the first two weeks. The upgrade pushes the model to the No. 2 spot in the global Arena rankings, a notable gain after OpenAI retired Sora and ByteDance shelved Seedance 2.0.
Built on a 15‑billion‑parameter unified transformer that processes text, image, video, and audio tokens together, HappyHorse 1.1 adds multi‑image reference (R2V) to keep character identities consistent across frames. Alibaba also reports stronger motion modeling, removal of visual artifacts like facial oiliness, zero‑drift lip‑sync, and improved handling of long, complex prompts. At the 1.0 level the service cost about $1.82 per 10‑second 720p clip and $3.12 for 1080p; the discounted pricing could make high‑quality AI video affordable for mid‑market agencies.
The rollout coincides with Alibaba’s rapid cloud expansion—new data centers in France and Japan increase its footprint to 105 availability zones—offering lower latency and compliance for European customers. However, the Pentagon’s recent listing of Alibaba as a Chinese military company adds regulatory scrutiny for Western buyers, meaning adoption will depend on both technical merit and geopolitical risk assessment.
