Anthropic's Claude Code has enabled its engineering team to ship at roughly three times its actual headcount. However, this increased productivity has shifted the bottleneck from typing code to deciding what to build. The company is now hiring more product managers to address this issue.
The traditional division of labor between engineers and product managers is no longer effective, as engineers can now generate code at a rapid pace. To keep up, engineers must develop skills beyond coding, such as understanding customer needs and validating product ideas.
The industry is undergoing a structural shift, with the bottleneck moving from integrated development environments to decision-making. Engineers who can think critically and make informed decisions about what to build will be in high demand, while those who wait for direction may be left behind.
