The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to face extreme heat challenges, with around 25% of the 104 matches potentially being played in temperatures exceeding recommended safety limits.
The World Weather Attribution analysis used a statistical model to calculate the probability of each match being played in extremely hot conditions, considering factors such as altitude, humidity, and regional climate.
Cities like Miami, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Houston are particularly at risk, with a high probability of temperatures reaching 82.4° Fahrenheit on the WBGT index, which is considered a high-risk threshold.
