Mercedes driver George Russell said McLaren could become a real threat to his team at this weekend’s Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after observing the British squad’s race‑pace in Friday’s practice sessions.
Rookie Kimi Antonelli topped both practice rounds on a hot Red Bull Ring, posting a lap 0.237 seconds quicker than McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and about a tenth ahead of Lando Norris. Russell’s comments reflect concerns that McLaren’s speed may translate into a podium challenge.
The upcoming qualifying will test whether McLaren can turn the practice form into a grid advantage, adding extra pressure to Mercedes as the championship battle tightens.
