Mercedes driver George Russell secured his seventh career victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, finishing 1.6 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen and 2.0 seconds ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Russell started from pole and maintained a solid lead through most of the 71‑lap race, converting his strong start into a win that returns him to second place in the Drivers' Championship.
The race saw Verstappen recover from a qualifying crash, climbing past Lewis Hamilton after a series of on‑track battles to claim second. Antonelli, despite running wide early and suffering a brake‑split issue, held on to third and kept his 40‑point lead over the rest of the field. Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Hamilton in fifth and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar in sixth. Both Cadillac drivers retired with overheating brakes, and several drivers faced technical gremlins.

Russell’s win narrows the gap to Antonelli, who now leads the championship by 40 points, while Verstappen remains a key challenger. The next round will test whether the Briton can maintain his momentum and if Antonelli can fend off the Red Bull and Ferrari challengers.
