Mercedes has introduced a new qualifying trick in Formula 1 that allows its drivers to deploy more power earlier on the straight. The trick involves backing off before the timing line to comply with the energy management rules, but still approach the line at full power.
The technique is complex and requires drivers to have intimate knowledge of their battery's energy level to lift off at the right moment. If executed incorrectly, it can result in disqualification from qualifying.

Rivals are now aware of the trick and may adopt it themselves, particularly at tracks like the Hungaroring where it could bring significant laptime benefits. However, they will need to ensure their drivers can lift off at the right moment to avoid breaching the technical rules.
