Honda’s factory team has set a single objective for 2027: reclaiming the MotoGP riders’ championship with Fabio Quartararo at the helm. Team manager Alberto Puig framed the goal as unambiguous, telling reporters at Silverstone that both Honda and the French rider are focused solely on returning to the top after years of underperformance. Honda’s last title came in 2019 with Marc Márquez, while Quartararo won for Yamaha in 2021 but hasn’t contended recently.
The push coincides with sweeping technical changes for next season, including 850cc engines and a switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres. Puig acknowledged the challenge but stressed the opportunity to close the gap with European rivals. He also praised outgoing riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini for helping Honda recover from a difficult 2024, while confirming Moto2 standout David Alonso as Quartararo’s teammate.
Alonso’s inexperience—he turns 21 this year—prompted cautious remarks from Puig, who suggested the seat alongside Quartararo may still go to LCR’s Diogo Moreira. A decision is expected soon, with Puig transitioning to an advisory role next season while mentoring new team manager Mikihiko Kawase. Mir will join Gresini Ducati, and Marini will ride for Tech3 KTM, completing Honda’s factory roster overhaul.
