The 2026 Formula 1 season has seen a unique upgrade war among top teams, with significant performance gains from new parts. According to McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, the laptime boost from upgrades is delivering 'two to three tenths of a second', a much more powerful gain than in previous years.
This has led to a war of words between Ferrari and Mercedes, with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur calling out Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff for insinuating that Ferrari is cheating. Vasseur explained that Ferrari is employing a deliberate strategy of upgrading its car aggressively early in the season.

The cost cap in place has made the upgrade process more challenging, with teams having to carefully plan their spending and prioritize upgrades. Smaller teams, such as Williams, are taking a more cautious approach, focusing on incremental updates rather than major overhauls.
