Alpine's Formula 1 team has regained its footing in the midfield after years of turmoil. The team's managing director, Steve Nielsen, attributes this turnaround to the introduction of common sense and stability. Nielsen joined Alpine in September last year and has brought a steadying influence to the team.
The team's technical development is led by David Sanchez, while Flavio Briatore acts as a shield between senior Renault management and the racing team. Briatore's impact has been significant, including convincing Renault to shut down its underperforming engine program and securing a title sponsorship deal with Gucci from 2027.
Despite the progress, Nielsen remains cautious, acknowledging that the team still lags behind Mercedes and McLaren. He identifies tyre management and aerodynamics as areas where Alpine needs to improve.
Nielsen believes that the team can make gains through development, but a significant reduction in the gap to the top teams will likely require a new car.
