The United States has withdrawn most of its forces from Nigeria after a recent operation against Islamic State militants. The operation, conducted in May, killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the second-in-command of ISIS globally.
The US and Nigerian forces worked together to conduct military operations in northeastern Nigeria, demonstrating Washington's approach of providing specialized capabilities while allowing African partners to lead security operations.
The operation has had a significant impact on Islamic State's leadership, with Nigerian military pressure and efforts to publicize the operation encouraging additional defections and surrenders among ISIS fighters. The US will continue to provide intelligence support to Nigeria at their request.
