The 15th deployment of US Marines to Australia under the Marine Rotation Force-Darwin initiative has been certified as a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force. This certification validates the force's credibility and proficiency, according to Col. George Flynn, commanding officer of MRF-D 2026.
The task force has maintained a heavy operational tempo, with personnel traveling to six or seven different countries to date. They have participated in major exercises with the Australian Army's Darwin-based 1st Brigade and Townsville-based 3rd Brigade.
The certification process was completed in early May during an exercise in the Philippines, demonstrating the force's ability to respond to crises. The Marine Corps continues to evolve for modern combat, with the use of unmanned aerial systems and first-person-view drones.
