The U.S. Army has awarded Hanwha Defense USA a $263 million contract to build prototypes of its wheeled 155mm K9 Mobile Howitzer under the Mobile Tactical Cannon program. The deal covers up to 18 systems for rapid prototyping, testing, and soldier experiments over four years, with an initial $100 million allocation.
The K9MH offers a significant mobility and range boost over the Army’s current towed M777 howitzers. Its 52-caliber barrel can reach over 37 miles with specialized ammunition, compared to the M777’s under-20-mile maximum. The wheeled design also enables faster emplacement and displacement—under 30 seconds—supporting ‘shoot and scoot’ tactics. Hanwha will supply six prototypes immediately, with options for 12 more, and integrate feedback from soldier-led experiments to refine the system.

This move aligns with the Army’s broader modernization push for long-range fires, though fielding isn’t guaranteed. The K9MH will first target Brigade Combat Teams equipped with Stryker vehicles, with airborne and infantry units also under consideration. The decision follows years of exploration and recent cancellations of competing programs like the XM1299, underscoring the Army’s urgency for a more adaptable artillery solution.
