The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, has entered its final months of operation. Despite its mandate expiring at the end of the year, the future of security arrangements in southern Lebanon remains uncertain.
UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel stated that the mission will continue until December 31, 2026. However, the UN Security Council has yet to decide on next steps, considering three options that would reduce the number of peacekeepers deployed in southern Lebanon.
The risk of a security vacuum in southern Lebanon looms as the end date nears. Several countries have expressed interest in maintaining an international presence in the area, with proposals including a post-UNIFIL multinational coalition and a three-year civilian and military mission to strengthen Lebanese authorities.
