Singapore’s Formidable class frigate RSS Steadfast has been photographed carrying the Blue Spear anti-ship missile, providing the first public visual confirmation of its installation aboard a frontline warship.
The Blue Spear, also known as the 5G SSM, replaces the legacy Harpoon system as part of a mid-life upgrade for the frigate class. Produced by the Israel-Singapore joint venture Proteus Advanced Systems, the missile offers a range of around 180 miles and is designed for beyond-line-of-sight engagements against maritime and land targets.

The upgrade extends the operational reach of the Formidable class, which has served as a core component of Singapore’s surface fleet since 2005. The Republic of Singapore Navy plans broader modernization efforts, including new combat systems and the upcoming Multi-Role Combat Vessels, alongside additional submarines and maritime patrol aircraft.

Proteus is now positioning Blue Spear as a Harpoon replacement for other navies, with sales already secured in Estonia and ongoing pitches in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
